Comfort Zones

I am sure you have heard it before – to step out of your comfort zone – but what does that really mean to you? I came across the idea again this week and this time I really wanted to stop and evaluate what it means for me. First of all, after years of life experience, for me it means having a desire to do or be different than what you are used to doing or being. It also takes sincere intention and sometimes doing the thing that no one thought you would even dare to do.

One experience I recall was when I decided that it was time for me to finish my college education. This was after years of being a working mom, dividing my time between work and home, and seeing my husband and kids through their schooling. It happened when my youngest was starting high school and I realized that if I didn’t take the leap of faith then the opportunity might pass me by. It meant leaving a full-time job to make the initial commitment of time and then encompassed a full-time school schedule and a new full-time job to cover both school and home expenses.

Stepping out of my “comfort zone” into this new world provided me with much more than just an education. It gave me new opportunities and challenges that created new energy and enthusiasm. Oh, don’t get me wrong, it wasn’t easy, but growth and change rarely are. How far are you willing to go? Once you start stepping out of your comfort zone and experiencing the possibilities that the Universe has to offer, I would say it is hard to go backwards. And, once you give it serious intention, watch out, the Universe is listening. Go ahead – step outside your comfort zone and see how far you can go. I’d love to know what happens.

until next time…
