Home for the Holidays (3)

Every list I have for preparing for the holidays says now is the time to update your address book for mailing out those cards and letters. And who knew there was so much prep involved! For instance, have you determined who you are sending cards/letter to? Everyone you know or just the people who live “out of town”? Do you have stamps? Are you making them or purchasing them?

The plan that has worked for me in getting them all out before the holidays have come and gone is to start the weekend after Thanksgiving. I prepare a basket with all my cards, envelopes, stamps, pens, etc. and keep it next to my chair where I watch TV. This way I can pace myself, and if writing personal messages, I really have time to think about what I want to say. I also give some to my husband, such as his aunts and uncles, so we share in the holiday joy. If you have young children, they can be given the task of putting on the stamps – but you have to be willing to have a few that aren’t perfectly straight, or they can help with sealing the envelopes.

Now is also the time to finalize your gift lists – both the giving and wishing. If you are planning on buying clothing for others be sure to have updated sizes for everyone. And don’t forget some of the best gifts are those we make ourselves, especially those that create memories.

Last, but not least, while you are in the midst of all the hustle and bustle, remember to breathe. While you are writing those cards and letters, enjoy a nice hot holiday beverage (and maybe a sweet snack or two). Let the moments sink in and not rush by you.

Wishing you a peaceful holiday season.

Until next time…
