In Praise of Praise
Years ago I had the privilege of working with some very dedicated educators/trainers/mentors. Yes, they were all three of those at once and one of the lessons I learned from them was the art of praise. Praise in the truest and most honest form is what makes a lasting impression and is most valued by those that receive it. There are also some specific techniques for giving that kind of meaningful praise.
First, it must be immediate. Second, it must be specific. Also, tell the person how their actions or efforts had or will have a positive effect on others or the organization where it took place. And, finally, encourage them to do more. Help people reach their full potential by catching them doing something right.
Honest praise also sends some critical life messages, such as: I believe in you, I trust you, I know you can do it, you are listened to, you are cared for, and you are very important.
Here are a few suggestions on ways to get you started offering praise…
- I’ve noticed the improvement in your work…
- You are really on top of things…
- I saw the way you worked through that problem and…
- I appreciated your creative approach to the task of…
And a few more creative ideas for making others feel special:
- A pack of Life Saver candy with a note saying, “You’re a real lifesaver.”
- A 100 Grand candy bar with a note saying, “You’re worth even more.”
- A package of rubber bands with a note saying, “Thanks for being so flexible.”
- A pack of batteries with a note saying, “Thanks for your endless energy.”
And lastly, these wise words from Arnold H. Glasow, “Praise does wonders for our sense of hearing.”
