Survive and Thrive

Are you feeling like you have been thrust into survival mode? Most of us are facing a compounded sense of stress with what is happening in our world and as humans, our brains are hardwired to respond by going into a survival mode of processing. So, how can we harness that response for survival and utilize it to our benefit rather than a detriment to our health?

There are a number of ways that we can hone our body’s response to stress. An article in Psychology Today suggests the following:

  • Develop situational awareness that helps you stay a step ahead of what is unfolding and anticipate and plan for changes.
  • Practice Mindfulness by incorporating meditation into your daily routine. You can start with a simple breathing meditation to focus on the present moment. Close your eyes, inhale deeply and say “Right here”, exhale fully and say “Right now”. Repeat at least 5 times.

But protecting our brain and body from extreme stress takes a bit more. These are five tips we are often reminded of:

  • Exercise regularly.
  • Get plenty of sleep.
  • Eat a Mediterranean diet.
  • Stay mentally active.
  • Remain socially involved.

And yet all of those things together still won’t activate our cells enough to fight off the compounded oxidative stress to our bodies. Science is now finding ways to turn on the pathways of our cells in ways that can help us not just survive, but THRIVE.
